This is one of the Korean foods you must try when you visit or live in Korea. I will talk about Korean porrdige from now. Every country has its own porrdige, Korea does it, too. There are many kinds of porridges in Korea, too. Some Korean people cook porrdige in the house, some like me buy it from the restaurant. It seems that making porridge is simple but for me, not. I usually buy it from the restaurant when I want to eat it.
There are many kinds of Korean tradional porridges. This is callled, pumpkin porrdige, one of my favorite porridges. Talking about Korean porridges, we usually use rice for it. But no rice needed for some porridges like pumpkin porrdge. Without rice, only pumpkin and a little bit of sugar, so soft and sweet.
In many cities in Korea, you can see BONJUK restaurant. This is the biggest brand of porridge restaurant. There are many BONJUK branches in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, etc. No matter what city you visit in Korea, I am sure that you can see this restaurant. You can dine in and also have take-out. In my case, mostly, pack and eat in the house or my office.
In the restaurant, there is a interesting saying on the wall. It says "We don't cook porridges before your order." That means they cook them right after they receive orders so that customers can have very fresh porridges. They make tastes with the heart and effort of mothers.
Here is the menu and prices of porridges of BONJUK. The cheapest porridge is White porridge, 6,000 won(5 USD). They cook White porridge with only rice and water. The most expensive porridge is Abalone porridge. If they put more abalone, the price goes up to 23,000 won(19 USD). Mostly, the prices are around 10,000 won(8.3 USD) or so.
According to the ingredient(Mungbean, redbean, pumpkin, black sesame, beef, tuna), there are many porridges in this restaurant. You can have many options. You can also ask cooks for the amount of salt and sugar. Very mild, salty, sweeter, basic taste, etc.
BONJUK is a big company for porridge business field. Now the model of BONJUK is LIM YOUNG WOONG, the most popular singer of Korea. I can see his face on the paper bag. I asked them to pack the porridge into 2 small containers. You can also have it in one big container, even split in 3 small containers. It's up to you.
When you order the porridge, you have also have 3 side dishes, Kimchi, beef, radish water kimchi(We call it dongchimee). Every side dish goes very well with porridges. The plastic spoon and wooden chopsticks are included in the package. One spicy sauce is also included. If you want the porridge more spicy, you can add some.
This time, I bought sweet pumpkin porridge which has rice ball in it. This is one of my favorite porridges. It's sweet and soft. The rice ball is included, I also enjoy having it. Its texture is very good and has a fabulous harmony with sweet pumpkin porridge.
In the old market, there are small shop for porridges. You can also Korean traditonal porridges in there. It is not important that which restaurant you can enjoy porridges in. When you visit Korea, if you have a chance to have Korean traditional porridges, it will be fun and precious memory in your life. Try this in Korea.
